It took only a few images of the visceral desert landscapes and the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei to convince me to make Namibia the first stop on a recent trip to Africa, my first to that continent.
The southwestern African nation is enjoying a slow burning tourism boom, with visitors drawn by its natural allure, reputation for safety and stable government. Its excellent road system in particular makes Namibia an ideal road trip destination.
Having recently travelled the roads of some of Canada’s Atlantic national parks (Kouchibouguac, Cape Breton Highlands), and the tundra and ice of some of our northern parks (Wapusk, Sirmilik), for a film/television project I was producing called The National Parks Project, I was eager to see how Africa’s best-preserved natural spaces stacked up to those at home.
